Cleaning The Humidifier

The humidifier must be kept clean at all times. Bacteria can grow in the water and on
wet surfaces in the moist environment of the humidifier, leading to infection.  The humidifier should be emptied, rinsed and refilled everyday.  It should be thoroughly cleaned and sanitized at least once a week, more frequently if ordered by the user’s doctor or respiratory therapist. It is recommended that a user have at least two humidifiers: one to use while the other is being cleaned.

The following items will be needed to clean the humidifier:
Dishwashing detergent
White vinegar
A small brush (i.e., tooth brush)
Two containers or buckets

The Power Company

A user of an oxygen concentrator should be instructed to contact their community’s power company and explain that he or she has life-sustaining equipment in the home. Should the user’s area experience a power failure, the power company should give priority to restoring power to the user’s home over others in the area that are not using such equipment.

Definition Of Home Oxygen Therapy

Home oxygen therapy is a term used to define oxygen therapy that is provided outside of a hospital or clinical setting. Home oxygen therapy includes therapy that does not allow patients to easily move around outside the house, as well as therapy that allows the patient to be extremely mobile. People with chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, cystic fibrosis, congestive heart failure, and fibrotic lung disease would be candidates for home oxygen therapy. There are several types of home oxygen equipment, each designed to meet a variety of patient needs: ambulation, dosage delivery and other needs.  Not every home oxygen system can satisfy every prescription or every patient need.
